# Team 5O5 (5O5 Advisory): insurance guides for Malaysians Practical guides to medical cards, life insurance, premium increases and claims in Malaysia from 5O5 Advisory, an Allianz agency in Kuala Lumpur. Index: https://team5o5.com.my/llms.txt Guides listing: https://team5o5.com.my/en/guides --- # How to claim insurance in Malaysia > Tell your insurer as soon as you can, before you worry about paperwork. Most problems we see are not caused by the wrong form, they are caused by waiting: memories fade, receipts go missing, and a delay becomes something the insurer has to ask about. Once notified, the claim turns into a document exercise, and that part is far easier to get right. Date: 2026-09-21 Canonical: https://team5o5.com.my/en/guides/how-to-claim-insurance-malaysia ## Notify your insurer before collecting documents The instinct is to wait until everything is in order before making the call. It is the wrong order. Notifying opens the file and starts the insurer's own process, and nothing stops you from sending documents after. If you have an agent, this is the call to make first. A claim that an agent opens on your behalf arrives with the right details attached, which removes a round of back-and-forth before anyone has read your case. ## Documents needed for an insurance claim Claims are decided on paper, not on how serious the situation feels. What usually matters: the doctor's report describing the diagnosis, itemised hospital bills and receipts, your identification, and the policy details. Medical, critical illness and life claims each ask for a different set. Ask the hospital for an itemised bill rather than a summary. A summary shows a total; an itemised bill shows what each charge was for, which is what the insurer needs in order to pay the parts your policy covers. ## Why insurance claims get rejected In the cases we have handled, rejections rarely come out of nowhere. The common causes are a condition that was not disclosed when the policy was bought, treatment that falls outside what the plan covers, or a claim made during a period the policy has not yet started covering. A rejection is not always the end. Insurers have an appeal process, and some rejections come down to a missing document or a report that did not say enough. That is worth checking before accepting the answer. ## How an insurance agent can help with your claim You can file a claim yourself, and plenty of people do. What an agent adds is knowing which documents the insurer will ask for before they ask, reading the rejection letter for what it actually says, and chasing the file when it stops moving. This is the part of the job that does not show up when you buy the policy, and it is the part that matters on the day you need it. ## Common questions ### How long does an insurance claim take in Malaysia? It depends on the type of claim and how complete the documents are when they arrive. A straightforward medical claim with a full set of documents moves faster than one where the insurer has to write back asking for a report. The single biggest thing within your control is sending a complete set the first time. ### What if my claim is rejected? Read the letter for the specific reason given, because that decides what to do next. A rejection based on a missing or unclear document can often be answered with the right paperwork. A rejection based on the terms of the policy is a different conversation. Either way, insurers have an appeal process. ### Do I need my agent to make a claim? No. You can deal with the insurer directly. An agent is there to make it faster and to catch the things that slow a claim down, not because the insurer requires one. ### Will claiming raise my premium? This depends on the type of policy and its terms, so check yours rather than assume. It is a fair question to ask your agent before you claim, and a reasonable agent will give you a straight answer. --- Got a situation of your own? Talk to us: https://team5o5.com.my/en/contact --- # How to choose a medical card in Malaysia > Start with the hospital costs you want covered and the payments you can sustain. Then compare plans on the same terms: benefits, claim limits, your share of the bill, exclusions and renewal conditions. A large annual limit alone does not tell you whether a medical card fits your needs. Date: 2026-09-21 Canonical: https://team5o5.com.my/en/guides/how-to-choose-medical-card-malaysia ## What does a medical card cover? A medical card is commonly used to access hospitalisation and surgical insurance. The contract determines which illnesses, treatments and expenses qualify. Check outpatient benefits separately rather than assuming every clinic visit or screening is included. Before collecting quotes, write down your preferred hospitals, any employer coverage and the amount you could pay yourself during an admission. Give every advisor the same brief so the proposals answer the same need. Source: [Financial Education Network: MHIT Made Simple](https://www.fenetwork.my/medical-and-health-insurance-takaful/) ## Compare benefits and annual limits together Ask for the product disclosure sheet and benefit schedule. Put the annual limit, any lifetime limit, room-and-board entitlement, outpatient benefits and benefit-specific limits side by side. Mark anything missing from the quotation for clarification. Use one practical question for every plan: if I need treatment at my chosen hospital, what could still be payable by me? Ask the insurer to explain room upgrades, non-covered items and the admission process using that plan’s actual wording. Source: [BNM: choosing and understanding medical insurance](https://www.bnm.gov.my/faqs/ins-tkf/life-family) ## Understand co-payment, co-insurance and deductibles A deductible is a specified amount you bear before the relevant benefits pay. Co-insurance is a percentage you share. Ask whether each applies per admission, per condition or per policy year, whether a cap applies, and whether both can apply together. Illustration only: 10% of an eligible RM20,000 bill is RM2,000. If a hypothetical plan caps that co-insurance at RM1,000, that component becomes RM1,000. A separate deductible or excluded expense may still be payable. This is an arithmetic example, not a quotation or an Allianz benefit. BNM’s co-payment clarification requires insurers to offer a co-payment option; it does not mean everyone must replace an existing plan without co-payment. Ask for the available choices and compare the premium saving with the cash you would need for a claim. Source: [BNM: co-payment requirements](https://www.bnm.gov.my/-/mhit-req-en) Source: [EPF: types of insurance in Malaysia](https://www.kwsp.gov.my/en/w/article/types-of-insurance) ## Check exclusions, waiting periods and medical disclosure Ask the insurer to identify any exclusions and waiting periods in writing. Explain your medical history accurately when applying, and ask how the insurer treats an existing condition before assuming it is covered. Keep the written answers with the quotation. A useful comparison has a column for unresolved questions, not just prices. If an answer changes which plan you would choose, resolve it before signing. Source: [BNM: choosing and understanding medical insurance](https://www.bnm.gov.my/faqs/ins-tkf/life-family) ## Compare standalone plans and medical riders Medical cover can be bought on its own or attached to another policy as a rider. With a bundled quotation, ask for the medical benefits, life benefits, other riders and charges to be explained separately. A higher total premium may be paying for several different kinds of cover. Compare like for like. If one quote includes life protection and another only covers hospital bills, first decide whether you need both benefits. Then ask for comparable options instead of judging the entire package by its monthly price. Guaranteed renewal does not mean a guaranteed fixed premium. Leave room in your budget for changes rather than spending your entire limit on the starting quote. Take these five questions to the discussion: What is covered? What do I pay when claiming? What is excluded? What could change at renewal? Which page of the policy confirms each answer? Source: [BNM: choosing and understanding medical insurance](https://www.bnm.gov.my/faqs/ins-tkf/life-family) ## Common questions ### Which is the best medical card in Malaysia? There is no single best plan for every person. Compare written quotations against your preferred hospitals, coverage needs, available cash for cost-sharing and long-term budget. This guide is a comparison checklist, not a ranking of insurers. ### How much does a medical card cost per month? There is no useful universal price without a specific applicant and plan. Request a personalised quote and check which benefits, cost-sharing terms and future charges it includes. A promotional starting price is not your confirmed premium. ### Does cashless admission mean I pay nothing? No. Cashless arrangements concern how eligible bills are settled. Ask about deposits, deductibles, co-insurance and non-covered expenses under your own plan. ### What should I bring when comparing medical cards? Bring existing benefit schedules, your employer’s coverage details, a sustainable budget and your questions about treatment access. Share health information through the insurer’s proper application process. --- Got a situation of your own? Talk to us: https://team5o5.com.my/en/contact --- # Medical card vs life insurance: what is the difference? > A medical card helps settle eligible treatment bills. Life insurance provides a death benefit under the policy terms. Critical illness cover can pay a specified cash benefit when a covered diagnosis meets the contract’s conditions. These benefits solve different financial problems, even when they sit inside one policy. Date: 2026-09-21 Canonical: https://team5o5.com.my/en/guides/medical-card-vs-life-insurance-malaysia ## Medical cards: help with eligible treatment bills Hospitalisation and surgical cover pays according to eligible medical expenses and the policy’s limits. It may also cover specified outpatient treatment. Check the benefit schedule rather than assuming that all healthcare spending is included. The question to ask is: if I need treatment, which bills would still come from my savings? Include the deductible, co-insurance and excluded items in that discussion. An annual medical limit is not a cash payment you receive simply for being diagnosed. Source: [Financial Education Network: MHIT Made Simple](https://www.fenetwork.my/medical-and-health-insurance-takaful/) ## Life insurance: financial support after a death The central purpose of a life death benefit is to provide money following the insured person’s death, subject to the contract. It can help address the financial needs left behind. Disability or other living benefits must be checked separately; they are not identical across policies. Start the conversation with the people who depend on you and the commitments that would continue without your income. List household support, debts and education costs, then identify existing resources. This gives the advisor a concrete gap to assess rather than an arbitrary sum assured. Source: [Sun Life Malaysia: medical vs life insurance](https://www.sunlifemalaysia.com/life-moments/bright-facts/medical-vs-life-insurance-takaful/) ## Critical illness cover: cash when a covered condition qualifies Critical illness benefits are different from reimbursement of a hospital bill. A qualifying claim can provide a specified lump sum that may help with living costs or income lost during recovery. The covered condition, severity and other claim conditions depend on the policy. An illustrative situation: someone has eligible hospital bills paid by medical insurance but cannot work for several months. Rent, food and family commitments still need funding. That is a separate question from whether the hospital bill was covered; it is not a guarantee that a particular diagnosis qualifies for a critical illness payout. Source: [EPF: types of insurance in Malaysia](https://www.kwsp.gov.my/en/w/article/types-of-insurance) ## One policy can contain several different benefits An investment-linked or other life policy may have a medical rider and additional protection attached. Seeing a life insurer’s name on your medical card does not by itself tell you the amount of life or critical illness cover you hold. Ask the advisor to label each benefit separately: medical annual limit, death benefit, disability benefit and critical illness benefit. Next to each, record what triggers payment, who receives it, the main exclusions and when the cover ends. Leave a blank where the policy does not include that benefit. Source: [Sun Life Malaysia: medical vs life insurance](https://www.sunlifemalaysia.com/life-moments/bright-facts/medical-vs-life-insurance-takaful/) ## Which should you prioritise with a limited budget? There is no universal buying order. Review treatment access, dependants, employer benefits, emergency savings and the premiums you can keep paying. A person supporting children faces a different financial gap from someone without dependants; neither situation can be judged from age alone. A useful next step is a one-page coverage map: the event you are worried about, the money needed, the benefit already available and the remaining gap. Ask an advisor to check that map against the actual policies before adding or replacing cover. Source: [EPF: types of insurance in Malaysia](https://www.kwsp.gov.my/en/w/article/types-of-insurance) ## Common questions ### Does life insurance automatically include a medical card? No. Check whether medical cover is expressly included as a benefit or rider. A policy name or the insurer’s brand is not enough to confirm hospitalisation cover. ### Is critical illness insurance the same as a medical card? No. A typical medical card concerns eligible treatment expenses. Critical illness cover pays according to the insured condition and benefit terms. Check each contract’s trigger and amount separately. ### Do I need personal cover if my employer provides insurance? Check the employer’s limits, covered family members and what happens when employment ends. Compare those facts with your own needs before deciding whether there is a gap. ### How much life insurance do I need? Calculate the commitments and support you want funded, then consider existing cover and resources available for that purpose. The answer depends on your household, so a universal salary multiple is only a starting assumption, not a completed assessment. --- Got a situation of your own? Talk to us: https://team5o5.com.my/en/contact --- # Medical insurance premiums increasing in 2026? What to check > First ask what is changing: medical repricing, an age-band increase, or the funding needed to sustain an investment-linked policy. Read the insurer’s notice before reducing payments or cancelling cover. BNM’s interim measures address certain repricing increases, but they do not promise that everyone’s total premium increase stays below 10%. Date: 2026-09-21 Canonical: https://team5o5.com.my/en/guides/medical-insurance-premium-increase-malaysia ## Why premiums can rise even without a claim Medical insurance uses a shared risk pool. When treatment costs and claims across that pool rise, the insurer may revise charges even for people who have not claimed. Age-related increases are a separate factor. Your notice should explain what applies to your policy. Compare the old and new notices line by line. Record the current payment, revised payment, effective date and any later scheduled increases. Ask the insurer to separate the causes instead of explaining everything with one percentage. Source: [LIAM: medical insurance repricing FAQ](https://www.liam.org.my/images/liam/FAQ-Interim-Relief-Measures-20Dec2024-FinalVersion.pdf) ## What BNM’s interim measures mean in 2026 BNM’s December 2024 announcement provides for repricing changes to be spread over at least three years, with the measure remaining in place until the end of 2026. It expected at least 80% of affected policyholders to see annual adjustments from medical claims inflation below 10%; that is not a universal cap. Age-band increases are excluded. Ask which part of your increase qualifies and how it is reflected in your letter. If you are aged 60 or above and on the minimum plan within your product, ask whether the one-year pause applies to you and when it starts and ends. Source: [BNM: interim measures through 2026](https://www.bnm.gov.my/-/mhit-pr) ## For investment-linked policies, check the insurance charges The premium you pay and the cost of insurance deducted from an investment-linked policy are different figures. Higher charges can affect how long the policy’s value supports the cover. Ask for the latest sustainability projection and the assumptions behind any recommended top-up. Allianz Life’s interim repricing FAQ directs policyholders to their notification letters and annual statements. An unchanged monthly bank deduction alone does not establish that the cover remains adequately funded. Ask what happens under both the current payment and the proposed payment. Source: [Allianz Life: interim medical repricing FAQ](https://www.allianz.com.my/content/dam/onemarketing/azmb/wwwallianzcommy/pdf/library/faq/ALIM_FAQ_InterimMeasuresMedicalRepricing.pdf) ## Compare the options before cancelling your medical card Ask for written options to retain the current benefits, reduce the plan level, or use available deductible or co-payment choices. For each option, record the premium saving alongside the benefits lost and the extra cash you would need when claiming. A lower monthly payment can mean a larger personal share of a hospital bill. Before replacing a policy, obtain written confirmation of the new cover, exclusions, waiting periods and start date. Ask how the transition affects continuity. Do not treat a new quotation as proof that replacement cover has already been accepted. As checked on 21 September 2026, BNM describes MediAsas as a limited pilot running from late July to October 2026, with a nationwide launch planned for January 2027. Final product features and pricing are to be published at launch. It should not be treated as a replacement policy already available to everyone today. If you are considering waiting for it, first confirm how you will fund treatment and maintain any existing protection during the gap. Recheck the official announcement before making a decision based on proposed prices or launch dates. Source: [BNM: MediAsas pilot and planned rollout](https://www.bnm.gov.my/MHIT) ## What to ask your insurer this week Prepare the repricing letter, benefit schedule and latest annual statement. Ask: what caused the increase, which relief applies, what lower-cost options are available, what each option changes, and when a decision or payment is due? Keep the reply with your policy records. If the explanation remains unclear, ask the insurer’s customer service or complaints team for a written breakdown. A useful answer identifies the policy, effective date and calculation; a general statement about medical inflation is not enough to check your own bill. ## Common questions ### Is every medical insurance increase capped at 10%? No. The interim announcement describes an expected outcome for at least 80% of affected policyholders, not a guarantee for every policy. Age-band increases are handled separately. Ask for your own breakdown. ### Can I just keep paying the old premium? Do not assume that this preserves your cover. Ask the insurer what the revised terms require and how a shortfall affects the policy. For investment-linked cover, request an updated funding projection. ### Will a cheaper medical card give me the same cover? Only a comparison of the actual terms can answer that. Check exclusions, limits, cost-sharing, renewal conditions and the effective date, as well as the premium. ### Are the temporary measures a permanent premium freeze? No. They provide temporary support. Future payments remain subject to the policy and subsequent insurer notices; do not assume today’s relief fixes the premium for life. --- Got a situation of your own?
